Organizational Setting and Reporting

  • UN-Habitat is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities and serves as the focal point for urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system.
  • UN-Habitat works with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities, contributing to SDG 11 and other SDGs such as poverty eradication (SDG 1).
  • The internship supports the Land, Housing and Shelter Section (LHSS) in the Urban Practices Branch, Global Solutions Division.
  • LHSS develops norms, standards, and guidelines at global, regional, national, and sub-national levels to support:
    • Equitable supply of serviced land at scale
    • Efficient and effective land management systems
    • Protection against arbitrary or forced evictions and security of tenure
    • Universal access to adequate housing
    • Participatory urban regeneration and slum upgrading
  • The intern will report to the Associate Programme Officer of LHSS and collaborate with colleagues across the section.
  • The internship is UNPAID, full-time, and requires five days of work per week. Remote work may be considered for part of the internship based on travel constraints.

Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Associate Programme Management Officer, the intern will:

  • Develop and format knowledge products, including policy briefs, data analysis, case studies, and human-interest stories, in collaboration with LHSS technical teams.
  • Draft and edit communication materials to support advocacy and knowledge sharing, including articles, newsletters, and social media content.
  • Support the communications team with media monitoring and growing subscriber/follower numbers across LHSS communication channels.
  • Summarize and translate complex data and research findings into accessible content for infographics.
  • Update and manage content for knowledge management platforms such as the Housing Knowledge Platform, Arab Land Initiative, and Global Land Tool Network websites.
  • Conduct research and analyze data and documents related to UN-Habitat land and housing projects at the global, regional, and country levels.
  • Support the design and implementation of land and housing advocacy campaigns.
  • Prepare background documents, agendas, and presentations for events and meetings; provide on-site or virtual support during workshops, webinars, and training sessions.
  • Map national, regional, and international events relevant to land and housing, considering cross-cutting themes such as human rights, climate change, and gender.
  • Contribute to monitoring project activities, including collecting inputs for progress reports and tracking results.
  • Attend meetings and events as needed and prepare summaries or reports of key discussions and outcomes.
  • Perform other tasks as required to support the LHSS work plan and objectives.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in a graduate programme (second university degree or higher)
    • Enrolled in the final year of a first university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent)
    • Graduated with a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD
  • Computer literacy in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Demonstrated interest in the UN and commitment to its ideals
  • Ability to interact successfully with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Preferred areas of study: Journalism, Communication, Philosophy, Social Sciences, Political Science, Gender Studies, International Development, Land Governance, Housing Studies, Urban and Rural Development, Migration, or related fields
  • Research, technical writing, knowledge management, and project development experience is desirable
  • Knowledge of land and housing policy is desirable

Languages

  • Fluency in oral and written English is required
  • Knowledge of another UN language, especially French, is desirable

Intern-Specific Information

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the UN
  • Travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution
  • Non-citizens or non-permanent residents may require visas or work/employment authorization
  • Visa requirements must be clarified before accepting the internship
