The internship is with the Global Programme on Crimes that Affect the Environment (CAE), part of the Border Management Branch (BMB), Division for Operations (DO), UNODC
Organized crime poses a major threat to the environment, including wildlife trafficking, fisheries crime, waste trafficking, and illegal mining
UNODC supports Member States in preventing and responding to crimes that affect the environment
Interns work full-time (40 hours/week) under the supervision of professional staff
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct research on transnational organized crime, with a focus on minerals crime and other relevant topics
Assist in drafting concept notes and background documents, taking stock of existing knowledge and suggesting operational recommendations for the Programme
Support desk work including fact-checking, editing, and proofreading
Help prepare promotional materials, social media posts, and website updates
Support data collection and organization, including maintaining files using accepted organizational methods
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications / Special Skills
Must meet one of the following criteria:
Enrolled in or recently completed a graduate school programme (Master’s or equivalent, Ph.D. or higher)
Enrolled in or recently completed the final year of a first university degree programme (Bachelor’s or equivalent)
Field of study should be closely related to the internship (e.g., criminology, law, political or social sciences, environmental studies, international relations)
Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and the CAE Programme
Good knowledge of standard software applications (MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams)
Ability to draft news articles and social media posts
Professional work experience is not required
Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English and French is required
Knowledge of an additional UN official language is an advantage (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish)
