Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of environmental sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The UNEP New York Office is responsible for strategic linkages with the UN system, key partners, and stakeholders in the context of interagency and intergovernmental processes based at UN Headquarters.

Under the supervision of the Senior Programme Management Officer of UNEP New York Office, the intern will:

  • Attend and summarize key discussions at meetings held at UN Headquarters, including those organized by the UN General Assembly, ECOSOC, Security Council, and UN missions in New York.
  • Research and summarize developments related to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and outcomes from relevant intergovernmental processes.
  • Conduct research to contribute to UNEP’s analytical products on trends and developments in intergovernmental processes at UN Headquarters.
  • Assist in planning and organizing meetings, briefings, roundtables, seminars, and other UNEP events.
  • Assist in preparing documents and arrangements for the organization of UNEP meetings, briefings, roundtables, seminars, and other events.

Qualifications / Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria at the time of application:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Be enrolled in the final year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent), preferably in environmental sciences, natural resource management, communication, or international relations.
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation.

Additional requirements:

  • The internship is unpaid, full-time, and lasts six months. Interns work five days per week (35–40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the assigned department or office.
  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience, but the field of study must be closely related to the internship.
  • Applicants must provide proof of enrollment or degree completion.

Languages

  • Fluency in English (spoken and written) is required.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.

Additional Information

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution.
  • Non-citizens or non-permanent residents may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
