Duties and Responsibilities
The Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) provides leadership, operational support, and oversight of the United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS) globally.
As a global leader in security risk management, UNDSS enables the safe and effective delivery of UN programmes and activities in complex environments.
The Operational Resilience Section (ORS) provides specialist support to improve the Department’s overall resilience through proactive and innovative approaches.
This internship supports ORS in generating and communicating data-driven analyses and insights for decision-making processes.
- Duration: three (3) to six (6) months, depending on departmental needs.
- The internship is unpaid and full-time (35 hours/week) under the supervision of a staff member in ORS.
- While designed to be in person, remote/hybrid or part-time (20 hours/week) arrangements may be considered exceptionally.
Responsibilities
The intern will support ORS’s strategic and operational objectives, including:
- Developing and implementing databases, data collection systems, analytics, dashboards, and other strategies to improve efficiency and data quality.
- Conducting independent research and analysis using quantitative and qualitative methods to identify trends, indicators, and patterns.
- Establishing and managing datasets from primary or secondary sources, including validation, cleaning, and maintenance.
- Presenting findings using visualization tools (dashboards, maps, charts, infographics) to support decision-making.
- Contributing to strategic innovation using emerging technologies such as machine learning and artificial intelligence.
- Performing ad-hoc analysis and reporting requests.
- Carrying out other duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Special Skills
To qualify for the UN Internship Programme, applicants must meet the following:
- Education Requirements:

- Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher), or
- Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level).
- Provide official written proof from the university confirming one of the above.
- Fields of Study:
- Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Information Management, Geographic Information Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, Management and Strategy, Analytics, Operations Research, Data Visualization, Information Design, Economics, or Business Administration.
- Additional Requirements:
- Computer literacy in standard software applications.
- Demonstrated interest in the UN’s work and commitment to the Charter’s ideals.
- Ability to interact effectively with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.

Additional Internship Conditions
- Children or siblings of UN staff members are not eligible for internships.
- Interns must adhere to all UN rules, regulations, and administrative instructions (ST/AI/2000/9 & ST/AI/2005/11).
- All materials prepared during the internship remain the property of the UN.
- Interns must respect UN impartiality and confidentiality, refraining from external communications or use of internal information without authorization.

Experience and Skills
- No professional work experience is required.
- Training or coursework in a relevant field is expected.
- Strong interest in data analytics, information management, visualization, and emerging technologies (e.g., machine learning, generative AI).
- Strong knowledge of data management, statistical methods, and research techniques.
- Familiarity with analytics and visualization tools such as Excel, Power BI, Tableau, SQL, R, Python, or ArcGIS.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Languages
- Fluency in English (oral and written) is required.
- Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

Internship Conditions
- Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
- Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the intern’s or sponsoring institution’s responsibility.
- Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the duty station country may be required to obtain the appropriate visa or work authorization.
- Successful candidates should confirm visa requirements before accepting the offer.
