Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Macroeconomic Policy and Financing for Development Division (MPFD) provides normative-analytical and capacity-development activities to 53 member States and 9 associate members of ESCAP.
  • Undertakes analytical studies, policy-oriented research, capacity building, and facilitates policy dialogues on medium- to long-term macroeconomic and financing for development issues in the region.
  • The internship is UNPAID, full-time, with a minimum duration of three months and a maximum of six months (five days per week, 35 hours).
  • MPFD has openings in two areas:
    • Macroeconomic policy and analysis
      • Undertake research and analysis in monetary policy, fiscal policy, tax cooperation, public finance efficiency and governance, and econometric analysis for policy evaluation.
      • Identify short- to medium-term risks to sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region.
      • Prepare summary tables, graphs, and other inputs for ESCAP publications, including the Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific, working papers, and policy briefs.
      • Perform other related duties as assigned.
    • Financing for development
      • Undertake research on sustainable and green financing instruments and modalities (green banking, green bonds, guarantees, debt-for-climate swaps, blended finance models).
      • Support demonstration projects such as issuance of sustainable bonds and other financing mechanisms.
      • Support national- and regional-level projects, including tracking trends and documenting case studies and best practices.
      • Conduct research on sustainable development challenges, success factors, and policy actions for financing SDGs.
      • Support technical consultations, events, and workshops for government stakeholders implementing green finance strategies.
      • Prepare summary tables, graphs, and other inputs for ESCAP publications such as the Financing for Development Series, working papers, and policy briefs.
      • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  1. Qualifications / Special Skills
  • Meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in, or completed, a graduate school programme (Master’s or higher).
    • Enrolled in, or completed, the final year of a first university degree (Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • Studied areas such as macroeconomics, international economics, development economics/studies, political economy, applied econometrics/statistics, finance, environmental studies, business administration, engineering, physics, mathematics, or related fields.
  • Computer literacy in standard software applications; knowledge of statistical packages (Stata, Eviews, SPSS, R) is desirable but not required.
  • Demonstrated interest in the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Ability to interact successfully with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
  • No prior work experience is required; education, training, and skills should benefit the UN during the internship.
  • Ability to work under pressure, in a team, and meet tight deadlines is desirable.
  • Drafting, oral communication, reference research, statistical methods, and data analysis skills are desirable.

  • English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat.
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written) is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language (e.g., Chinese or Russian) is an asset.

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the UN.
  • Travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or sponsoring institutions.
