Duties and Responsibilities
This internship is located within the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA - unescwa.org) Cluster on ‘Gender Justice, Population and Inclusive Development’ which focuses on gender equality and gender justice; equitable, inclusive and participatory social development; poverty and unemployment reduction; and migration issues.
1 - Provide substantive research support on subjects related to the work of the cluster: this includes reviewing existing literature; assisting in crystallizing research questions; conducting desk research.
2 - Assist in the preparation and review of written outputs published by ESCWA e.g. background papers, technical papers, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications.
3 - Draft inputs to presentations and research papers.
4 - Assist in the organization of expert group meetings, conferences or workshops related to the work of the cluster.
5 - Prepare minutes of meetings.
6 - Perform other duties as requested.
The duration of a United Nations internship is for a minimum of two months on a full-time basis - this may be exceptionally extended for a maximum period of 6 months.
Qualifications/special skills
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
Applicants must:
(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above);
Applicants must:
(a) be computer literate in standard software applications.
(b) have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter; and
(c) have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
No previous work experience is required for this job opening.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA.
For this position, fluency in Arabic and English is required.
