Graphic Design Intern – Global Strategy and Policy Division, Office of Human Resources (UN HQ New York)

Work Location:

  • Designed to be in-person and full-time (35 hours/week) at the UN HQ in New York
  • May be adjusted based on the request of the selected candidate (remote and/or part-time arrangements possible)

Expected Duration:

  • 3 to 6 months
  • Minimum of 2 months, extendable up to 6 months
  • UNPAID internship

Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of a Human Resources Officer, the Graphic Design Intern will:

  • Assist in designing and producing visual content, including:
    • Publications, websites, blogs, email campaigns
    • Social media assets, brochures, presentations
    • Advertisements, event materials, posters, banners, flyers, infographics
  • Participate in the full design workflow:
    • Develop concepts, storyboards, and drafts
    • Incorporate feedback from team leads and stakeholders
    • Finalize layouts for production and contribute to project evaluations
  • Support the layout and development of:
    • PowerPoint presentations
    • Newsletters, reports, and other communications products
  • Research and prepare content for printed and digital materials
  • Assist in maintaining and updating:
    • Internal and external websites
    • Social media channels
  • Support:
    • Event coordination and outreach
    • Creation of supplementary communications materials
  • Contribute to:
    • Video editing and sound design for digital media
    • Promoting accessibility in all graphic design and communication products
  • Attend project briefings and meetings, and report on:
    • Workflow and project statuses
    • Design recommendations and campaign approaches
  • Stay current on trends in:
    • Graphic design, communications, marketing, and accessibility

Qualifications / Special Skills:
Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (Master’s or equivalent)
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent)

Additional requirements and desirable qualifications:

  • Field of study should be closely related to graphic design or communications
  • No prior professional work experience is required
  • Ability to use graphic design tools is desirable:
    • Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
    • Canva, Figma, etc.
  • Ability to create visual content for:
    • Social media, websites, publications, or presentations
  • Ability to support:
    • Event coordination, outreach, or communications material preparation (flyers, banners, announcements)

Languages:

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish)

Additional Information – Visa and Work Authorization Requirements:

  • For in-person internships in the USA:
    • Non-U.S. citizens or residents must obtain a G-4 visa for full-time internships (35 hours/week)
    • Students on F-1 or J-1 visas with work authorization may only intern part-time
  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations
  • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution
  • Interns not residing in the host country must secure appropriate visa and work authorization before starting
  • Selected candidates must discuss specific visa requirements before accepting the internship
