Job Description

The Engineering Intern will transition from theoretical civil engineering knowledge to practical site application. The intern will be paired with Senior Engineers and Infrastructure Advisors to oversee the warehouse construction lifecycle from foundation works to final commissioning. Key Learning Outcomes: 1. Exposure to UNOPS international building codes, policies, and safety standards. 2. Hands-on experience in industrial site management and contractor supervision. 3. Understanding of structural design specific to large-span steel or concrete warehouses. 4. Practical skills in construction scheduling, quality control, and “As-Built” documentation.

The internship is a learning opportunity that targets fresh and prospective graduates. The Engineering Intern will assist the Infrastructure Unit and support the UNOPS Bangladesh team. The intern will be exposed to practical learning and working experiences that foster the development of his /her path.

This specific project involves the end-to-end construction of a modern warehouse facility designed to enhance supply chain resilience. The project focuses on high-quality industrial standards, including structural integrity, safety protocols, and sustainable material usage.

The primary purpose of this role is to provide foundational support to the Infrastructure Unit in UNOPS Bangladesh, specifically contributing to the successful and timely delivery of the modern warehouse construction project. The Intern will gain practical exposure by work-shadowing Senior Engineers and Project Managers in all phases of the construction lifecycle, ensuring adherence to quality control, safety standards (HSSE), and project documentation requirements, thereby transitioning theoretical engineering knowledge into practical application within an international development context.

The Engineering Intern will be engaged as a crucial member of the Infrastructure Unit, transitioning academic theory into practical application under the close guidance of Senior Engineers. This role emphasizes work-shadowing, hands-on contribution, and the opportunity to lead small, value-adding projects that leverage the Intern’s fresh academic knowledge to improve current processes.

A. Core Engagement & Project Contributions

* Actively participate in the daily supervision of on-site construction activities.

* Be responsible for collating site feedback and drafting preliminary reports for review.

* Monitor and report on adherence to Health, Safety, Social, and Environmental (HSSE) requirements.

* Conduct and document initial site assessments, reporting findings to the supervisory team.

* Contribute to the drafting and review processes of project designs and technical documents.

* Participate in and document on-site meetings with contractors and key stakeholders.

* Prepare and submit weekly and monthly progress reports to the Project Manager.

* Contribute to key stakeholder management and communication activities.

B. Technical Work-Shadowing & Ownership

* Work-shadow architects, engineers, and quantity surveyors in the planning, project scheduling, and task management processes.

* Ensure documentation is prepared to meet UNOPS quality standard requirements.

* Contribute to the timely delivery of expected project outputs.

* Learn and practice the production of bills of quantities (BoQ) for proposed works.

* Maintain daily site logs and dedicated health & safety logs.

* Execute inspection of works and accurately record findings at specific construction milestones, in line with project specifications.

* Witness and meticulously record quality control checks (e.g., concrete slump tests, sampling/crushing of cubes, reinforcement checks).

* Prepare site progress reports, including required visual documentation (images and videos).

* Monitor project progress against the planned schedule and proactively raise any deviations with supervisors.

* Undertake a small, dedicated project (e.g., improving an element of the quality control process or project documentation cycle) to deliver a tangible process improvement to the Infrastructure Unit.

 Learning Opportunities and Professional Development

This internship is designed as a structured, high-value learning experience. Beyond the invaluable on-the-job experience gained through direct project involvement, the intern will have access to:

* Corporate Learning Access: Access to UNOPS’ extensive library of internal and external learning platforms and courses, designed to build core competencies in areas like project management, sustainable infrastructure, and ethical conduct.

* Professional Certification Support: The opportunity to study for and access resources related to key industry certifications, such as the PRINCE2® Foundation Certificate, which is highly valued in the international development and project management sectors.

* Mentorship: Direct mentorship from Senior Engineers and Infrastructure Advisors, providing personalized career guidance and technical expertise.

* Knowledge Exchange: A platform to share fresh academic perspectives and innovative ideas with the team, ensuring the internship is a mutually beneficial engagement.
