Duties and Responsibilities

Programme and Project Support (Tehran Convention)

  • Assist with resource mobilization activities supporting the implementation of the Tehran Convention (TC) and its Protocols according to the Rolling Work Programme
  • Conduct desk studies on priority actions for implementing the TC and its Protocols
  • Draft written outputs, including concept papers and notes prepared by the TC Secretariat
  • Draft communications to Caspian Governments, project partners, and stakeholders regarding resource mobilization activities
  • Support the implementation of joint UNDP-UNEP project “Addressing Marine Litter and Marine Plastic – a Systematic Approach in the Caspian Sea”
  • Support the implementation of joint UN Habitat/UNEP/IOM project “Building Climate Resilient Cities and Communities in the Republic of Azerbaijan”
  • Conduct background research and analysis on emerging political and environmental trends in the Caspian Sea Region
  • Maintain the Tehran Convention website and create textual, graphic, and other materials
  • Organize online meetings of Contracting Parties representatives and draft supporting documentation

Support to the Scientific Conference “Changes in the Caspian Sea Level: Causes, Modeling, Adaptation Strategies” (May 2026; Proceedings publication targeted for 5 June 2026)

  • Manage abstracts and short papers workflow, including call for papers, receipt, logging, completeness check, and tracking against deadlines
  • Provide organizational and editorial support to the Organizing and Scientific Committees, including preparing reviewer lists, coordinating review assignments, monitoring deadlines, and compiling decision records
  • Conduct initial quality checks on submissions for scope, structure, methodology, results clarity, word/format limits, references, and ethical declarations
  • Support scientific review process by preparing review templates, consolidating reviewer comments, corresponding with authors, and tracking version control
  • Assist with language and technical editing of accepted short papers in English and, where feasible, in Russian; verify consistency of terminology, figures, tables, captions, and citations
  • Provide logistical and content support for conference sessions (hybrid format), including drafting session briefs, speaker bios, agenda notes, slide decks, live note-taking, rapporteur coordination, and post-session summaries
  • Contribute to outreach materials for TC website and partner channels, including web updates, calls for papers, acceptance notices, and post-event communications

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Must meet one of the following at the time of application:
    • Enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher)
    • Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (Bachelor’s or equivalent)
    • Graduated with a university degree
  • Preferred areas of study: Environmental Law, International Law, Political Science, International Relations
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Effective communication skills with diverse stakeholders
  • Proficiency in standard software applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, Teams)
  • Ability to draft reports, emails, and communication materials in English

Languages

  • Fluency in English required
  • Knowledge of Russian is an advantage

Intern Specific Information

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations
  • Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents may need appropriate visa and work authorization
  • Successful candidates should clarify visa requirements before accepting the internship
