Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in the Trade Policy and Facilitation Section (TPFS) of the Trade, Investment and Innovation Division of UN ESCAP.
  • Gain experience working with professional staff and experts on trade and trade policy.
  • Conduct research and analysis related to trade and trade policy.
  • Provide training and capacity building for policymakers and researchers.
  • Deliver advisory services to member governments.
  • Organize regional dialogues, meetings, and forums.
  • Focus on development needs of least developed countries and other countries with special needs.
  • Work under the supervision of a staff member, full-time (35 hours/week), remote or onsite.
  • Contribute to policy research on trade, digital trade, e-commerce, global value chains, multilateral and regional trade agreements, globalization, and trade-related regulations.
  • Undertake literature analysis, draft background and discussion documents, and policy notes.
  • Support the preparation of presentations and training-course materials.
  • Support data work, including identification of data sources, collection and analysis, and database maintenance.
  • Edit and format papers.
  • Support the organization of online or onsite events such as seminars, trainings, online courses, and meetings, including administrative, logistics, communication, and dissemination tasks.

  • Interns are UNPAID; travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.

    • Relevant courses in Economics, International Trade Economics, Development Economics, Data Analysis, and International Laws.

Selection Criteria

  • Commitment to six-month internship (onsite or remote).
  • Degree or current PhD/postgraduate study in Economics or Law.
  • Experience in international trade, development policies, or trade-related/international laws.
  • Experience in data management, analysis, and programming (e.g., Excel, R, Python, web scraping, SQL).
  • Experience in regulatory analysis or trade agreement analysis.
  • Excellent drafting skills in English (academic style).
  • Strong media and communication skills (infographics, video, presentations, social media, copywriting, editing, formatting).

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Enrolled in or completed a graduate program (second university degree or higher) or final year of a first university degree (minimum Bachelor’s level).
  • Degree in Economics preferred.
  • Relevant training, education, advanced coursework, or skills that benefit the UN during the internship.
  • Candidates who have completed a 6-month internship in another UN Secretariat entity must have a different advanced degree to apply.

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish).

  • Non-citizens or non-permanent residents may require visas or work authorization.
