Work Location

  • Bangkok office

Expected Duration

  • 3-6 months
  • 5 days per week (35 hours)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • UNPAID internship, full-time, conducted in person under the supervision of the Chief, Space Applications Section (SAS) and relevant officers.
  • Conduct research on space applications for sustainable development related to six thematic areas of the Asia-Pacific Plan of Action on Space Applications for Sustainable Development:
    • Disaster risk management
    • Natural resource management
    • Connectivity
    • Social development
    • Energy
    • Climate change
  • Contribute research inputs to develop knowledge products, including UN publications, working and technical papers (intern contributions duly acknowledged).
  • Assist in developing and/or updating digital platforms and multi-media content.
  • Support the implementation of capacity development projects.
  • Assist the team in day-to-day activities and tasks.
  • Contribute to ESCAP’s mission to help member states harness space applications, geospatial information, and digital innovations to advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
  • Support the implementation of the Asia-Pacific Plan of Action on Space Applications for Sustainable Development (2018-2030) through:
    • Research and knowledge-sharing
    • Capacity-building and technical support
    • Intergovernmental discussions and regional practices
  • Focus on thematic areas such as monitoring drought from space, integrating geospatial information for resilience building, and using space and GIS to advance the Sustainable Development Goals.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Education:
    • Enrolled in or completed a graduate programme (second university degree or higher), or
    • Enrolled in or completed the final year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent)
  • Field of study should be closely related to the internship.
  • Must be a student in the final year of a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. programme or have completed these degrees.
  • Good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • Strong research and writing skills are preferable.
  • Knowledge of North and Central Asia is desirable.

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Fluency in Russian and/or any official Central Asian language is strongly desired.
  • Knowledge of additional official UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish) is an advantage.

Additional Information

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or sponsoring institutions.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the host country may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
  • Successful candidates should confirm visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
