The internship is located in the Data Analytics and Statistics Section (DASS), Research and Analysis Branch (RAB), Division for Public Affairs (DPA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
DASS is responsible for collecting and processing data on illicit drugs and crime, producing relevant estimates for flagship publications and mandated reports.
Work includes methodological development, revision of data collection instruments, data validation and analysis, desk research, and drafting statistical products, datasets, and reports.
Consultations with other UN bodies, international, regional, and national government organizations, as well as individual experts and UNODC staff.
Specific tasks may include:
Assist in background research and review of data collection instruments and methodological guidelines.
Assist in the analysis of trends in time series on drugs and crime using internal and external databases.
Collect information from multiple sources, carry out research, and assist in preparing statistical products and inputs for inclusion in UNODC reports, documents, and regional studies.
Assist in the preparation of international workshops and meetings related to data on drugs and crime.
Carry out other relevant assignments as required.
Internships are UNPAID and full-time (5 days per week, 40 hours).
Qualifications/Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following:
Enrolled in, or recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher).
Enrolled in, or recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
Computer literacy in standard software applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint essential; knowledge of R, Python, Stata, and MS Access desirable).
Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the UN Charter.
Ability to successfully interact with individuals from different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, demonstrating tolerance and understanding.
For this internship specifically:
Studies in social sciences, criminology, epidemiology, statistics, economics, data science, IT, mathematics, or equivalent are required.
Some research experience in crime, drugs, or a comparable study area is an asset.
Applicants must provide official proof of enrollment or completion of their degree at the time of application.
Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
Knowledge of an additional UN official language is an advantage (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish).
