Job Description

Work Location

  • In-person in New York, USA, or remote.
  • Full-time or part-time modalities may be considered.

Expected Duration

  • 4 months, with the possibility of extension for an additional 2 months.
  • Desired start date: February 2026.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Internship in the Monitoring, Reporting and Regional Partnerships (MRR) Team of the OSRSG CAAC in New York.
  • Reports to the Project Lead / Political Affairs Officer.
  • Supports initiatives and tasks related to the OSRSG CAAC mandate, focusing on regional projects in Africa, particularly in collaboration with the African Union and the Economic Community of Central African States.
  • Unpaid, full-time (35 hours/week); part-time may be considered depending on intern status.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on issues related to children affected by armed conflict, with focus on child protection in continental and regional early warning systems in Africa.
  • Support the preparation of a regional conference on children and armed conflict and the prevention of grave violations in Central Africa.
  • Assist country desk officers with research, drafting, note-taking, or other tasks related to children affected by armed conflict in situations on the mandate’s agenda.
  • Prepare reports, concept papers, policy documents, talking points, articles, and other materials, including public information materials using data visualization tools.
  • Participate in and take notes at events and meetings with stakeholders.
  • Perform administrative tasks and other duties as needed.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in or completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
    • Enrolled in or completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • Computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.

Work Experience

  • No prior work experience required.
  • Relevant training, education, advanced coursework, or skills should benefit the UN during the internship.

Competencies

  • Ability to research, compile, and draft materials accurately and clearly.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural and multilingual environment.

Languages

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of French or another UN language is an advantage.

Additional Information

  • Visa and work authorization are mandatory.
  • For internships in the USA, non-citizens or non-permanent residents must obtain a G4 visa or another valid status (e.g., F1, J1) and approved employment authorization (CPT/OPT/AT).
