Health Affairs Publishing, LLC, publishes groundbreaking, nonpartisan research and analysis to improve health and health care, including in its flagship product, Health Affairs, the nation’s most read and influential health policy journal. We are looking for a highly skilled executive director to provide strategic and operational leadership to Health Affairs Publishing. The Executive Director, along with the Editor in Chief, will oversee the strategic and operational efficiencies of Health Affairs Publishing’s programs and staff. This seasoned leader will not only understand current trends in the publishing field but will also have experience in developing and implementing a revenue plan within the tax-exempt context. Experience in hiring and managing staff is essential, and established relationships within the publishing community are a plus. Above all, the Executive Director should be highly effective in a leadership role that requires clear communication skills and decisiveness.
The Executive Director provides leadership for the Editor in Chief, Executive Publisher, Executive Editor, Director of Health Equity, and Senior Director, Marketing and Digital, and Finance Director in achieving Health Affairs Publishing LLC’s objectives.
KEY OBJECTIVES
· Work closely with its Member, Project HOPE, to assess and address issues affecting the organization
· Oversee daily operations of the organization, providing executive direction for strategies and efficiencies, compliance, and quality assurance
· Ensure operational efficiencies, a balanced budget, and executing strategic plan for sustainability
· Identify and address staffing requirements for efficient operations, and maintain a strong work culture that attracts and retains people while driving the organization’s mission
· Develop and implement the organizational strategic plan and an actionable plan for fundraising and managing monthly cash flow
· Comply with all applicable laws, rules and regulations
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
· Encourage a supportive environment to retain talent and establish a highly productive and engaged team.
· Manage the organization in accordance with the approved budget.
· Collaborate with the Editor-in-Chief, Executive Publisher, Executive Editor, and Director of Health Equity to achieve all publishing, editorial, and programmatic objectives.
· Work with the Senior Director, Marketing and Digital to increase awareness of the organization.
· Meet aggressive annual fundraising goals, by securing financial support from foundations, corporations, individual donors, and government funding sources.
· Oversee all external communications, including website, marketing collateral, newsletters, and social media.
· Build and lead an effective team that is dedicated to fulfilling the organization’s mission through highly successful programs, community engagement, and fundraising.
· Maintain and build high-level contacts with current and prospective funders to establish a strong revenue pipeline.
· Seek out potential funders and engage their interest in new opportunities.
· Actively cultivate and engage prospects throughout the entire process of lead development to contract award.
· Optimize and strengthen development activities while maintaining editorial independence of the journal.
· Maintain credibility of Health Affairs Publishing LLC as a trusted, leading voice in health policy research and thought leadership.
· Continue strengthening outreach to organization’s stakeholder communities (authors, readers, funders, policymakers, editorial board) regarding editorial content, themes, and strategy.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
· Seven or more years of experience in senior management, preferably with nonprofit organizations
· Experience in managing multi-million-dollar organizations, with a preference for organizations in the health care sector and those focused on communications, policymaking, publishing, or research.
· Expertise in publishing and communications.
·· Established network with funders and donors, such as foundations, national agencies, and corporate philanthropies, particularly in the health care sector.
· Successful experience in fundraising and development.
· Ten or more years of management experience in leading strong and successful teams.
· Graduate degree preferred; preferred fields of study include business administration, nonprofit management, publishing, the social sciences, health policy and management, public health, medicine, journalism, and law.
· Strong experience in public relations, marketing, and fundraising.
· Knowledge of leadership and management principles for nonprofit organizations.
· Proven success working with a board of directors.
· Entrepreneurial mindset, with an innovative approach to business planning.
· Passion for the visions and missions of Health Affairs Publishing and Project HOPE.
· Strong integrity and cultural sensitivity
