Job Description

Work Location

  • Full-time and in-person (can be adjusted based on candidate needs)
  • Hybrid working arrangement at UN Premise, New York, United States

Expected Duration

  • 3–6 months
  • Initial 3 months, with possible extension up to 6 months depending on Division needs

Duties and Responsibilities
The Field Operations Finance Division seeks motivated individuals to gain professional experience in financial management, budgeting, accounting, and financial procedures in an international organization. Responsibilities may include:

  • Researching and compiling historical information related to mandates, expenditure patterns, adopted strategies, and socio-economic context for budget submissions
  • Ensuring resource requirements align with UN rules, regulations, and Security Council/General Assembly mandates
  • Participating in budget preparation, including consolidation and presentation of programmatic and financial information
  • Monitoring implementation of UN budgets
  • Identifying variances between approved budgets and actual expenditures
  • Generating financial information using databases and spreadsheets

Qualifications/Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher)
  • Enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s or equivalent) in business/public administration, finance, or a related area
  • Completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. programme

Additional requirements:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word (required)
  • Experience in data analytics or related area (desirable)
  • No prior professional work experience required, but field of study must be closely related to the internship

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English (required)
  • Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is an advantage

Additional Information

  • Visa and Work Authorization Requirements (for USA-based internships):
    • Non-US citizens/permanent residents must obtain a G-4 visa for full-time internships (at least 35 hours/week).
    • Students on F-1 or J-1 visas with work authorization may only intern part-time.
