Expected Duration

  • 2 to 6 months

Duties and Responsibilities
The intern will be based in Doha, Qatar, under the overall guidance of the Head of the Centre and the direct supervision of the assigned Human Rights Officer. The supervisor will provide close follow-up, regular review, and ongoing guidance throughout the internship. The intern will support the Centre in fulfilling its mandate, working with human rights officers and staff across different thematic areas.

Main duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Supporting the Human Rights Education and Training Unit and the Knowledge Management and Documentation Unit in delivering activities such as meetings, training programs, and workshops
  • Assisting with database management, including collecting, analyzing, and organizing data
  • Conducting research on human rights issues relevant to the Centre’s mandate
  • Translating documents between English and Arabic
  • Collecting and entering data relevant to human rights work and assisting in the development of the Centre’s information and resource tools
  • Participating in staff meetings and contributing to administrative tasks such as drafting minutes, preparing participant lists, writing reports, and drafting concept notes
  • Assisting in organizing and implementing activities
  • Performing other related duties as required

Qualifications / Special Skills
To qualify for the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent), or
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher)

Additional qualifications:

  • Background in political science, social science, law, human rights, international relations, or other relevant fields
  • No prior work experience is required, but education, training, or skills should benefit the United Nations during the internship
  • Computer literacy in standard software applications is required

Languages

  • Fluency in English and Arabic (both oral and written) is required
  • Knowledge of French is an advantage

Intern-Specific Information

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations
  • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institutions
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the internship location may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization
  • Successful candidates should clarify visa requirements before accepting the internship offer
