Work Location

  • Flexible: Designed to be in-person and full-time (40 hours), with possibility of hybrid or remote work modalities to be discussed with the successful candidate.

Expected Duration

  • 3 months with possibility of extension up to 6 months.
  • Expected start date: 8 October 2025.

Duties and Responsibilities

Background

  • Located within the Judicial Support & Cooperation Section (JSCS) of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) to assist in investigation and prosecution of serious crimes under International Law in Syria since March 2011.
  • The IIIM provides analytical support through open-source research, investigation, monitoring, data processing, and contextual analysis.
  • Contributes to supporting different national jurisdictions by collecting and assessing publicly available information relevant to case development.
  • Opportunity for interns to develop analytical and data management skills and gain firsthand experience with a UN international accountability mechanism.
  • Reports to the P2 Associate Information Analyst assigned to the JSCS.

Tasks Directly Related to Support to Ongoing Criminal Investigations

  • Open-source searches:
    • Conduct contextual open-source searches in support of criminal investigations (incident verification, contextual background).
    • Monitor specific open sources for updates relevant to active domestic criminal investigations.
    • Support analysis of material/records relevant to criminal investigations, including preparation of timelines, locations, overviews, background/history, etc.
  • Monitoring & reporting:
    • Conduct weekly open-source monitoring of political and judicial developments relevant to JSCS work.
    • Report findings to JSCS.
  • Data entry and metadata support:
    • Enter and verify record-related information regarding material collected or preserved by IIIM.

Contribution to JSCS Workflows and General Support Tasks

  • Assist in informal translations and summarizing relevant materials from Arabic into English.
  • Take minutes during internal JSCS or cross-sectional meetings as needed.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in or completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher).
    • Enrolled in or completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree).
  • Pursuing or completed a degree in areas such as criminology, law, Middle Eastern studies, conflict/security studies, international relations, human rights, criminal law, political/social science, or related fields.
  • Knowledge regarding criminal accountability in the Middle East is desirable.
  • Good knowledge of standard software applications (MS Word, MS Outlook, MS Teams).

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
