Duties and Responsibilities

  • Internship with the Social Development Division / Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Section (GESIS) for 3-6 months.
  • ESCAP’s Social Development Division consists of three sections:
    • Sustainable Demographic Transition Section (SDTS)
    • Sustainable Socio-economic Transformation Section (SETS)
    • Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Section (GESIS)
  • GESIS covers gender equality and disability inclusion, including mainstreaming gender and disability in all ESCAP work.
  • Specific duties may include:
    • Conduct research and analyze data on disability inclusion (economic participation, inclusive employment, digital inclusion, accessibility, women and girls with disabilities).
    • Assist in organizing and convening internal and external meetings.
    • Contribute to preparation of written outputs and data visualization (background papers, speeches, presentations).
    • Provide substantive and administrative support for technical cooperation projects on disability-inclusive employment, business, and digital inclusion.
    • Support ESCAP’s implementation of the UN Disability Inclusion Strategy.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Section.
  • Internship is unpaid, full-time (37.5 hours/week), onsite or remote, under supervision of a staff member.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Applicants must meet one of the following at the time of application:
    • Enrolled in, or completed, a graduate school programme (Master’s or higher).
    • Enrolled in, or completed, the final year of a first university degree programme (Bachelor’s or equivalent).
  • Additional requirements:
    • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite).
    • Keen interest in UN work and commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
    • Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Competencies:
    • Communication: clear speaking and writing, listening, tailoring messages, openness in sharing information.
    • Teamwork: collaborative work, valuing others’ input, supporting group decisions, sharing credit.
    • Client Orientation: considers services recipients as clients, builds trust, anticipates problems, meets timelines.
    • Planning & Organizing: sets goals, prioritizes activities, allocates resources, foresees risks, monitors plans.
  • Experience (not required but an asset):
    • Academic background in disability-related subjects.
    • Research and writing skills for literature reviews and analytical outputs.
    • Organizing or supporting accessible meetings/events for persons with disabilities.
    • Knowledge of CRPD and assistive technologies/accessibility tools.

Languages

  • Fluency in English required.
  • Knowledge of a national language from the Asia-Pacific region is an asset.
