This internship is designed to be full-time and in person, but can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate.

Duties and Responsibilities
The internship is located in the various branches of the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), based in New York. Interns typically report to the Chief of a Section or to a Statistician. The internship is UNPAID and full-time (35 hours per week), with flexibility for remote, hybrid, or part-time arrangements depending on the candidate’s circumstances.
Interns will contribute to statistical projects supporting data collection, analysis, visualization, software development, and dissemination. Specific responsibilities include:
- Create research and written contributions for drafting reports and documents
- Support data collection, manipulation, validation, analysis, dissemination, and visualization
- Create software prototypes using programming languages such as Python
- Produce inputs for outreach efforts, including social media content
- Maintain and update databases and dashboards
- Assist in meetings and perform other ad hoc tasks as assigned
- Design, organize, plan, and manage the collection, evaluation, analysis, compilation, and dissemination of statistical data
- Assist in developing and managing statistical databases
- Support training and technical assistance on data collection programs and country practices
- Conduct methodological research to inform technical documentation
- Prepare draft technical documents and assist in drafting meeting reports
- Organize seminars, working groups, and expert meetings
- Contribute to communication, data storytelling, infographics, and outreach initiatives
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications/Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate program (second university degree or higher)
- Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree)
Additional qualifications:
- Knowledge of Python, R, or similar programming languages (desirable)
- No prior professional experience is required, but a related field of study is necessary
- Familiarity with MS Word, PowerPoint, and MS Teams
- Ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts (desirable)
- Experience designing surveys and polls (desirable)
- Ability to develop software in Python or similar programming languages (desirable)
Languages
- Fluency in spoken and written English is required
- Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish)
Intern Specific Information
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institutions. Non-citizen interns may require a visa and appropriate work authorization. Successful candidates should confirm visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
