Duties and Responsibilities
The internship is based in the Human Settlements Unit of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Santiago. It will last between 3 to 6 months depending on office needs and candidate availability.

ECLAC, founded in 1948, is one of five regional commissions of the United Nations. Its mission is to contribute to economic and social development in Latin America and the Caribbean through policy design, monitoring, advisory services, training, and promoting cooperation at regional and international levels. The intern will support legal research and review existing legislation related to circular economy in urban land use and recycling/renovation. Duties may include:

  • Researching, compiling, organizing, and analyzing information from various sources for reports, work plans, studies, briefings, and conferences
  • Proofreading documents and translating between Spanish, English, and Portuguese
  • Editing texts for accuracy, grammar, punctuation, style, and adherence to formatting standards
  • Preparing inputs such as tables, charts, graphs, and diagrams for reports and presentations
  • Preparing, adapting, and reviewing web content, and uploading it to unit platforms
  • Formatting documents according to organizational standards
  • Compiling statistical data to support sustainable urban development reporting

Qualifications/Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate program (second university degree or higher)
  • Be enrolled in or have completed the final year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent)

Additional requirements:

  • No prior work experience is required, but the field of study must closely relate to the internship focus
  • Applicants must provide proof of enrollment or completion of studies at a later stage
  • Candidates should demonstrate the ability to conduct research on circular land use management and urban recycling, including relevant knowledge in urban law, urban planning, and public policy

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written Spanish is required
  • Knowledge of Portuguese is an advantage
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat

Additional Information (Intern Specific)

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations
  • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the intern’s responsibility
  • Interns who are not citizens or residents of the internship location may need to obtain a visa or work authorization
  • Selected candidates should clarify visa requirements prior to accepting the internship offer
