Org. Setting and Reporting

  • The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) provides leadership, operational support, and oversight of the UN Security Management System (UNSMS) globally.
  • UNDSS enables safe and effective delivery of UN programmes in complex and challenging environments, optimizing resources.
  • The internship offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in security, contribute to peace and security, human rights, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Internship can be remote, in-person, full-time (35 hours/week), part-time (<34 hours), or hybrid (20 hours/week) depending on arrangements.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Content Development:
    • Assist in designing and producing professional training videos, including scenario-based medical simulations for Emergency Trauma Bag (ETB) and Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) courses.
  • Outreach & Awareness:
    • Support the development of social media and web-based platforms to raise awareness, motivate engagement, and share best practices among global first responder networks.
  • Research & Data Mapping:
    • Conduct data collection and analysis to identify gaps and map areas where first responders are most needed in humanitarian and high-risk environments.
    • Contribute to strategic planning and programme prioritization.
  • Programme Support:
    • Assist in preparing presentations, training materials, and communications for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Desired Background:
    • Communications, digital media, safety and security management, humanitarian affairs, or related fields.
    • Experience in video production, editing, or digital storytelling.
    • Strong research and analytical skills, including data visualization.
    • Familiarity with social media strategy and digital outreach tools.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficient in standard software applications (e.g., MS Office 365 or similar).
    • Ability to prepare reports and presentations.
  • Personal Skills:
    • Interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to UN ideals.
    • Ability to interact successfully with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities.
    • Willingness to take on varied tasks and responsibilities.

Languages

  • Fluency in English (oral and written) is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Internship Eligibility Rules

  • Children or siblings of UN staff cannot be assigned to the same work unit or under supervision of related staff members.
  • Observe UN rules, regulations, instructions, procedures, and directives.
  • Provide copies of all materials prepared during the internship to the receiving department.
  • UN retains all property rights (patents, copyrights, trademarks) related to internship outputs.
  • Respect impartiality and independence of the UN; do not communicate information externally without authorization.
  • Comply with UN Internship Programme conditions: UN Internship Programme ST/AI/2020/1.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Must be:
    • Enrolled in a graduate school programme (second degree or higher), or
    • Enrolled in the final year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s), or
    • Graduated with a university degree as defined above.

Intern Specific Information

  • Interns are unpaid.
  • Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
  • Non-citizens or non-permanent residents may require appropriate visa and work authorization.
  • Successful candidates should verify visa requirements before accepting the internship.
