Job Description

Expected Duration: 6 MONTHS

Duties and Responsibilities

This internship opportunity is available in the Africa Section of the Country Teams, Coordination Operations Division, Department of Global Communications (DGC). Its duties include managing stakeholder relations, supporting events around key moments, supporting in the creation of communications content and digital assets, and supporting the work of the Africa Section9s mandate.

This internship is offered for six months and is designed to be in-person/hybrid or remote. The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the Chief of the Africa Section.

Under the supervision of the Chief of the Africa Section, the incumbent will be responsible for the following functions:

  • Assist in organizing and coordinating key events, including helping with logistics, preparations, and liaising with internal teams under supervision.
  • Aid in the creation of event flyers, save-the-date notices, and social media graphics under the guidance of senior staff, using designated design software.
  • Support the research relevant to the section’s work, particularly in areas of trade and economic development in Africa.
  • Assist in managing social media accounts by preparing draft content and schedules for review and approval by senior team members.
  • Assist in transcribing interview recordings for senior team members’ review.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of ongoing partnerships with outreach groups, including academic institutions, youth, and women’s organizations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Special Skills

Please note that to qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher)
  2. Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor9s level or equivalent).

Applicants must also:

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language including Kiswahili and French is desirable.
