Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the UN system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The Disasters and Conflicts Programme:

  • Works with international and national partners to provide technical assistance and capacity development for environmental policy implementation.
  • Strengthens environmental management capacity in developing countries and countries with economies in transition.
  • Extends UNEP’s work to areas affected by conflict or disaster, providing specialized expertise to rapidly identify risks to health, livelihoods, and ecosystems.
  • Promotes sustainable management of natural resources as a precondition for sustainable development, peacebuilding, and disaster risk reduction.
  • Has conducted field operations in over 40 countries since 1999 and works closely with humanitarian, development, and peace-building frameworks of the UN.

Communications:

  • UNEP emphasizes strategic communications to advocate for the environment, including social media engagement.
  • The Disasters and Conflicts Programme collaborates with teams globally on communications related to its work.

Environment Security Work:

  • Focuses on how environmental degradation and climate change interact with peace and security dynamics.
  • Ensures measures to protect the environment, promote climate resilience, and support peace in politically complex contexts.
  • Activities include:
    • Analysis: Assessing environmental changes, drivers, linkages to peace and security, and priority concerns.
    • Solution design: Identifying good environmental practices (e.g., ecosystem restoration, natural resource governance, water infrastructure).
    • Support to implementation: Partnering with stakeholders, managing partnerships, and navigating political sensitivities.
    • Governance, policy, and advocacy: Supporting environmental policy development, capacity building, and climate security solutions.

Internship Duties (under supervision of Project Manager and Approving Officers):

  • Provide day-to-day programme and project management support, including planning, coordination, and follow-up with partners.
  • Assist in preparation, review, and monitoring of project workplans.
  • Support communications and outreach activities: drafting press releases, newsletters, web stories, and social media content.
  • Assist in preparing reports, briefing notes, talking points, and presentations for senior management and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the organization of meetings, workshops, and field visits, including logistics and documentation.
  • Assist with data collection and analysis for monitoring and evaluation, including outcome tracking against indicators.
  • Engage with Somali and international partners to ensure alignment with UNEP’s broader Climate, Peace, and Security agenda.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a graduate program in International Development, Environmental Studies, Public Administration, Project Management, or related fields.
  • Applicants must be in the final year of a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. program, or have recently completed such a program.
  • Field of study must be closely related to the internship.
  • Proof of enrolment or completion must be provided.

Languages

  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written) is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN language is an asset.

Competencies

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment.
  • Proficiency in research and report writing.
