Expected Duration

  • 3–6 months, starting 22 December 2025

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The internship is located in the United Nations Team of Experts on the Rule of Law and Sexual Violence in Conflict (TOE), Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict (SRSG-SVC).
  • TOE was created by UN Security Council resolution 1888 (2009) to assist national authorities in strengthening the rule of law and ensuring criminal accountability for perpetrators of conflict-related sexual violence.
  • Internship period: initial three months, with potential extension up to six months depending on TOE needs.
  • UNPAID; can be full-time or part-time (20–35 hours per week). Work hours determined in consultation with supervisor, considering organizational requirements and time zone differences.
  • Responsibilities include:
    • Supporting monitoring of relevant developments in countries of interest to TOE.
    • Assisting with routine administrative tasks related to TOE and support to the Office of SRSG-SVC.
    • Helping organize conferences, events, and meetings.
    • Assisting with note-taking and drafting summaries/action points of internal and external meetings.
    • Conducting research and other related tasks for TOE members.
    • Accompanying TOE members to meetings with Permanent Mission delegates, other Secretariat offices, and multilateral meetings (e.g., Security Council, General Assembly).
    • Assisting in preparation of public information/social media material, presentations, and documents for TOE members.
    • Performing other functions as requested by the supervisor.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Applicants must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in or completed a graduate school program (second university degree or higher).
    • Enrolled in or completed the final academic year of a university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level).
  • Additional requirements:
    • Computer literacy in standard software applications.
    • Keen interest in the work of the UN and commitment to its ideals.
    • Ability to successfully interact with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, demonstrating tolerance and understanding.
  • Preferred: degree in law for TOE internship.
  • No prior work experience required.

Languages

  • Fluency in English required.
  • Knowledge of French desirable.
  • Knowledge of other UN official languages is an advantage.

Additional Information

  • Visa and work authorization:
    • Interns in the USA who are not citizens, permanent residents, or on other non-immigrant status (e.g., F1/J1) must obtain a G4 visa.
    • Selected interns are responsible for ensuring valid visa and employment authorization (CPT/OPT/AT).

  • Interns are unpaid; costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
  • Non-citizen interns may need appropriate visa and work authorization.
