Expected Duration

  • 2–6 months
  • UNPAID, full-time (5 days per week / 40 hours)
  • Internship period: 2 months initially, with possible extension up to 6 months depending on office needs and intern availability

Organizational Setting and Reporting

  • The internship is located in the Office of the Director (OD), United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), Vienna, Austria.
  • Reports directly to the Programme Management Officer, Office of the Director.
  • The Office of the Director:
    • Supports overall direction, administration, and management of UNOOSA.
    • Leads external relations and public information activities.
    • Oversees coordination and cooperation with entities involved in space-related activities.
    • Maintains the United Nations Register of Objects Launched into Outer Space.
    • Implements assigned partnerships, initiatives, and activities.
  • Selected interns may work remotely from their country of nationality/residence, subject to travel restrictions and availability of transportation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare written outputs such as background papers, analytical and briefing notes, and sections of official reports and studies.
  • Support the implementation of fundraising activities, outreach initiatives, and external relations activities.
  • Draft background notes, papers, factsheets, spreadsheets, and other documents in support of fundraising and administrative obligations.
  • Prepare inputs for publications, draft speeches, statements, and presentations for the Director for global conferences and meetings of the UN and space-related entities, including the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and its subsidiary bodies.
  • Provide general administrative support as needed.
  • Prepare monthly reports, summaries, meeting minutes, standard operating procedures, and other management-related outputs.
  • Perform other tasks as necessary.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Education: HS Diploma required; must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in or recently completed a graduate school program (second university degree or higher).
    • Enrolled in or recently completed the final year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
  • No professional work experience required.
  • Field of study should be closely related to the internship.
  • Computer literate in standard software applications; proficiency in preparing spreadsheets.
  • Ability to successfully interact with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds, demonstrating tolerance and understanding.
  • Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.

Languages

  • Fluency in English (spoken and written) is required.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish).

UNOV manages and implements the United Nations programme on the peaceful uses of outer space and provides common services, such as conference services, information services, security and safety services, procurement services and general support services, for the organizations located at the Vienna International Centre. UNOV is closely associated with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). A shared Division for Management, in addition to the common services listed above, supports both organizations with financial resources management services, human resources management services and information technology and communications services.
