Duties and Responsibilities
The UN Resident Coordinator (RC) leads the UN Country Team (UNCT) in China, which includes all UN entities present in the country. The Resident Coordinator System (RCS) aims to bring together UN agencies to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of operational activities at the country level, helping the UN act as a more relevant and reliable partner for governments in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) supports the roles and functions of the RC and the UNCT by providing inter-agency coordination support and ensuring coherence across UN mechanisms and thematic groups.

Key functions of the RCO include:

  • Strategic analysis, planning, and positioning of the UN Country Team.
  • Preparation and monitoring of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF).
  • Support to joint UN programming and operations management.
  • Policy guidance, joint advocacy, and communications to enhance UN coherence.
  • Improvement of the overall programme impact of the UN System in China.

The RCO China is seeking a Partnership and Protocol Intern to join its office.

  • Duration: Six months.
  • Nature of Internship: Full-time and unpaid (5 days per week, 8 hours per day).
  • Supervisor: UN Partnership and Financing Officer.

Responsibilities of the Intern include:

  • Supporting the organization of RCO’s major events, including logistics coordination, preparation of briefing materials, and drafting speeches.
  • Compiling and preparing briefing and presentation materials, background information, and documentation on China’s key policies and developments.
  • Assisting in organizing and following up on inter-agency and high-level meetings or events attended by the RC or RCO staff.
  • Providing logistical and substantive support to incoming high-level UN delegations.

Qualifications / Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in international development studies, economics, political sciences, or related fields.
  • Have completed the final academic year of a first university degree (bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the above-mentioned fields.

Additional requirements:

  • Proficiency in office software packages and web-based management systems.
  • Skills in graphic design are an advantage.
  • Familiarity with the Government of China and international development agencies.
  • Experience in event management and coordination, especially those involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience with UN agencies, international organizations, or NGOs is considered an asset.

Languages

  • For national candidates: Fluency in written and spoken English and Chinese.
  • For international candidates: Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory; fluency in any other UN language is an asset.
