Job Description

Work Location

  • In person at the UNDRR New York Liaison Office
  • Possibility of partial remote work

Expected Duration

  • 6 months, full-time
  • Desirable dates: 12 January to 11 July 2026

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Background:
    • UNDRR is the UN system’s focal point for disaster risk reduction, guiding, monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on progress under the Sendai Framework 2015–2030
    • Supports regional and national implementation and works with UN Member States, civil society, private sector, parliamentarians, and scientific communities
    • The New York Liaison Office integrates disaster risk reduction into intergovernmental deliberations and UN Headquarters policy decisions
  • Key Responsibilities:
    • Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, reports, issue briefs, talking points, articles, presentations, meeting minutes, etc.
    • Support organization of intergovernmental meetings, conferences, and side events; provide substantive, logistical, and administrative support in virtual and hybrid formats
    • Collect and systematize information on disaster risk reduction practices and sustainable development issues; prepare briefings based on research and analysis
    • Support outreach, research, and analysis on current disaster risk reduction and sustainable development issues relevant to intergovernmental processes
    • Provide support for policy development, including review and analysis of emerging issues and trends related to disaster risk reduction, climate change, and sustainable development
    • Assist in maintaining databases, websites, and mailing lists

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Must meet one of the following criteria:
    • Enrolled in or completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher)
    • Enrolled in or completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent)
  • Field of study should be closely related to the internship
  • Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter
  • Ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, demonstrating understanding and tolerance
  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience

Languages

  • Fluency in English is required
  • Knowledge of an additional UN official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is desirable
