Job Description

About you:

Maybe you’ve been a chief development officer at an NGO or you’re a leading philanthropy advisor. Maybe you worked as a program officer yourself. Either way, you’ve got a strong background in global development with particular expertise in how philanthropies work and how to secure funding from them. You can use that expertise to conduct compelling interviews with philanthropy executives — elevating your own profile and bringing valuable expertise to our community.

You understand the current trends and inner workings of the global development industry — who funds projects, how proposals are written, and what it takes to successfully fundraise. You’re comfortable speaking on these topics and have a network of philanthropy executives you can invite for live virtual events. You’re eager to find out who’s who in the industry, and what insiders are talking about, and bring those compelling stories to our audience of development professionals.

You’ll thrive in an environment where you’re supported by a team of experienced journalists who will assist you in planning these live conversations.

Do you value the chance to support global development professionals who need to know the latest trends and tips around development financing and fundraising? Are you full of ideas and the motivation to see those ideas come to fruition? Are you excited to be part of a news organization that has a social impact focus and an open, teamwork-focused culture? Read on.

About the job:

This part-time role begins as a temporary maternity leave cover position that will run from September to March, but it could be extended longer term.

You’ll be responsible for organizing and hosting several weekly webinars and events focused on how organizations in international aid get funded, as well as writing up what you learned in those discussions.

You’ll build contacts with key individuals working in the world of development funding, use those contacts to plan events, conduct interviews, and work on building exclusive insights for our audience of business development professionals and other executives working for NGOs, philanthropic foundations, development consultancies, humanitarian aid organizations, and more. And you’ll be producing content that helps them make smart decisions and get ahead in their day-to-day work.

You’ll work with the wider editorial and data analysis teams to understand the existing work we do, and to map out new ideas. You’ll also work on stories collaboratively with other reporters, the production and multimedia team, and the audience engagement team.

Types of content you might produce

  • A conference call where you interview a foundation’s senior program officer and field questions from subscribers
  • A podcast with a senior figure at an international NGO about the current fundraising landscape and their own strategies
  • An interview with an influential philanthropy consultant on the latest trends and leaders in the space

Required Qualifications

Here are the basic requirements we’re looking for in the role…

  • A highly credible background in philanthropy and/or business development/fundraising in global development, together with strong speaking and interviewing skills

Nice-to-haves

Besides the basics, here’s what we’d love to see…

  • A passion for global development and a knowledge of its institutions
  • Familiarity with moderating panels and webinars
  • Fluency in accessing and analyzing funding information, from financial documents to databases
