Job Description

Are you a journalist able to dig into global development, land exclusives, and break news? Do you understand the inner workings of the development industry — who funds projects, how foreign assistance flows, the latest trends in organizations ranging from large for-profit contractors to small NGOs. Are you excited to be part of a news organization that has a social impact focus and an open, teamwork-based culture? Read on.

You have a strong background in global development and a desire to learn more about what makes the industry tick. You have a track record of sharp reporting, strong analysis, and fresh ideas. You can dig into a beat and explore the relevant decisions and the leaders who make them inside organizations, whether it’s an INGO, social enterprise, government agency, or philanthropic foundation.

You thrive in an environment where you’re supported by a team and able to work both independently and collaboratively with reporters whose beats overlap yours. You know how to reach your audience directly in your own voice, and how to manage competing priorities, and smoothly juggle work and communicate across time zones.

Job Location: Global remote position

What you’ll do here

Devex is seeking a global development correspondent who will cover the inside story of the industry — from billion-dollar aid contracts to grassroots innovations — and help our audience of professionals understand what’s happening, why it matters, and who’s driving the change.

You’ll be writing exclusive stories, as well as a mixture of quick-hit news pieces, long-form features, and newsletters that are part of our stable of successful email products. You’ll come to weekly editorial meetings with smart, timely pitches, brief other Devex reporters on key issues when needed, and be able to talk about these issues comfortably during panels and webinars.

Your first year will look a little bit like this…

In your first 90 days, you’ll get up to speed on key issues in your beat and cultivate sources inside relevant organizations. You’ll stay on top of breaking news, secure exclusive interviews with leaders, and begin to identify trends that could become bigger-picture features.

You’ll also develop a good understanding of your role within the wider Devex news team and work on stories collaboratively with other reporters, the production and multimedia team, and the social media engagement team.

After your first year, you’ll have a strong grasp of development news and institutions. You’ll have a robust network of sources, whether it’s an NGO CEO, philanthropic donor, or government official. You’ll have cultivated these sources to deliver a steady stream of compelling reporting from unique angles, becoming a respected voice in the sector.

You’ll also work to help hit our KPIs, which include increasing the number of Pro paid subscribers and monthly active users online. You’ll be open to feedback during regular performance reviews. And your reporting will help grow Devex’s influence, readership, and subscriber base — while shaping conversations in the development community.
