The team

Are you enthusiastic about working on projects and helping project- and portfolio managers get a better insight in the running of their projects and project portfolio? And do you like to really understand, work with and help improve complex Excel tooling? In this internship, you will help Portfolio Management Office (PMO) deal in an optimal way with their projects and project portfolio. You will be part of a dynamic team and a truly international organization!

This internship is within the Strategy Department, which has FMO’s strategy at its core, supporting the Managing Board and FMO leadership on key topics throughout the “strategy cycle”. The main activities of the department consist of:

  • Strategic context and trend analysis.
  • Responsibility for and facilitation of strategy setting, thought leadership, and policy advice on FMO’s SDG / development impact agenda, annual business planning, and change project selection and monitoring.
  • Key support for making FMO a “learning organization” via performance monitoring and follow-up by way of evaluations and knowledge management.

Having just completed FMO’s corporate strategy (“Strategy 2030”: Pioneer-Develop-Scale), the department will play a crucial role in the coming years supporting and facilitating the rest of the organization in achieving FMO’s ambitious goals.

The Strategy department consists of four teams: Evaluations & Knowledge Management (EKM), Portfolio Management Office, Strategic Planning and Sustainability Strategy & Policy.

Your role

FMO has seen a growth in their number of projects and this internship is geared toward the successful management of that growing project portfolio.

As a PMO intern you will support the portfolio officers and project managers. With the provided tooling you help them with business cases, various (project) reports, and the reports for the Management Board.


Key responsibilities in your role are:

· Support the PMO team with various project and portfolio management task.

· Help prepare the Management Board reports.

· Maintain and improve tooling of reports.

· Update/Improve/Develop SharePoint sites.

· Facilitate, organize PMO general communication.

The reward is EUR 750 net per month (based on 40 hours).

This opportunity will be a great combination to your studies if you:

  • Are studying or have studied in a field related to Business, Economics or Information Management,
  • Are proficient with Office 365 tools, particularly Microsoft Office Excel, Teams, and SharePoint, and you are open and able to learn (new) technologies.
  • Are proficient in English.
  • Have an affinity with FMO’s mission, interest in the field of (global) development, and impact investing.
  • Have an affinity to work on projects related to data, reporting.
  • Have good writing, editing, and visualization skills.

And particularly if you:

  • Can self-manage your time, take ownership of tasks, and deliver good quality results in agreed timelines.

Have good intercultural communication skills.

  • Are able and willing to bring new insights from your perspective and studies.
  • Are not afraid to suggest improvements, ask questions, and learn from mistakes.

Please not that to apply for this internship, you must be:

  • A third- or fourth-year HBO or MSc student, currently enrolled in a program in The Netherlands.
  • Eligible to receive credits (ECTs) for this internship, either for your thesis or as part of your curriculum.
  • Available for a period of six months, four days per week preferably.
  • Living in The Netherlands.
