Duties and Responsibilities

Internship Overview

  • UNPAID, full-time (35 hours per week) internship based at the United Nations premises in New York, USA.
  • Can be adjusted to part-time (20 hours per week) or remote based on the successful candidate’s needs.
  • Department of Peace Operations (DPO) provides political and executive direction to UN peacekeeping operations and integrates efforts of UN, governmental, and non-governmental entities in peace operations.
  • Position located in the DPO Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI), Justice and Corrections Service (JCS).
  • JCS serves as a center of expertise on justice, corrections, and rule of law, supporting UN peace operations and host countries in delivering justice services, strengthening criminal justice systems, and facilitating rule of law reforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support substantive work of Justice and Corrections Service in peace operations, focusing on criminal accountability, gender parity, prison training, and strategic engagement.
  • Assist with implementation of justice and corrections projects, including research, analysis, drafting case studies and background papers, and administrative coordination.
  • Coordinate and provide administrative support for meetings with internal/external partners and Member States; prepare agendas, briefing papers, and summary notes.
  • Conduct research and analysis on legal, judicial, and correctional reform issues to support policy and guidance development.
  • Prepare analysis on issues and developments related to JCS work globally or in assigned countries.
  • Assist desk officers in supporting specific peace operations with research and related tasks.
  • Accompany JCS staff to meetings with Permanent Missions, other Secretariat offices, and sessions of the Security Council, General Assembly, and multilateral meetings.
  • Take notes and draft summaries/action points of internal and external meetings.
  • Assist with preparation of public information, social media material, presentations, and documents for senior JCS staff.
  • Perform any other functions as requested by the supervisor.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Must meet one of the following at the time of application:
    • Enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
    • Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s or equivalent).
  • No professional work experience required, but the field of study must be closely related to the internship.
  • Applicants must provide proof of current or completed academic degree (official certificate required later).
  • Good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of an additional UN official language is an advantage.
  • Official UN languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish.
