Position located in the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions, Department of Peacekeeping Operations.
UNMAS works to eliminate threats from mines, explosive remnants of war, and improvised explosive devices by coordinating UN mine action, leading operational responses, and supporting standards, policies, and norms.
Intern will serve in the UNMAS Colombia Programme, reporting to the Chief of Mine Action Programme (CMAP).
Focus on post-conflict areas in Colombia, integrating humanitarian, peacebuilding, and development objectives.
Internship duration: 3 months, with possibility of extension; unpaid.
Work schedule: full-time (35 hours/week) or part-time (20 hours/week), hybrid arrangement combining UN premises in Bogotá and remote engagement.
Main Tasks:
Assist with implementation of Mine Action projects, including research, analysis, case studies, background papers, and administrative coordination.
Provide information on the location of explosive ordnance as contribution to peacebuilding.
Support Humanitarian Action to protect children and adolescents affected by armed conflict.
Provide crosscutting support to UNMAS Coordination Office and assist incoming projects in agreement with CMAP.
Support UNMAS Colombia Programme Resource Mobilization strategy.
Document decisions and actions on programme issues.
Facilitate cross-project learning and best practice transfer through documentation and lesson sharing.
Support communications and visibility strategy (draft social media content, assist with events).
Support preparation of draft budgets and project proposals/documents for donor submission.
Qualifications/Special Skills
Must meet one of the following:
Enrolled in, or completed, a graduate program (Master’s, Ph.D., or equivalent).
Enrolled in, or completed, final academic year of a first university degree (minimum bachelor’s).
Field of study closely related to the internship is required.
Proficiency in standard word processing and office software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or similar).
Demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to UN ideals.
Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Must cover costs for travel, visa, accommodation, health insurance, and living expenses.
Must disclose prior UN internship and family relationship with UN staff, if applicable.
Languages
Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
Knowledge of an additional UN official language is an advantage.
Official UN languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish.
