Duties and Responsibilities
The position is at the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The Internship Programme is unpaid and full-time, i.e., an intern is expected to work five days per week (40 hours). The internship is offered on a hybrid basis.
The position is located in the Division of Technology and Logistics (DTL). The internship will start on 1 April 2025 for an initial period of 3 months.
Responsibilities
In the framework of the TrainForTrade Programme of UNCTAD and under the supervision of the Chief of the Human Resources Development Section/TrainForTrade of the Trade Logistics Branch of the Division on Trade and Logistics, and the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, the incumbent will undertake the following tasks:
- Assist in quantitative and qualitative background research on trade-related issues, digital economy, trade statistics, and port management.
- Participation in online meetings and webinars with the supervisor and/or the team.
- Contribute to the management of TrainForTrade online courses, including:
- Moderation in the forum.
- Exchange of emails with participants.
- Work on the restitution webinars.
- Prepare short drafts on specific issues as indicated by the supervisors, including the development of charts and graphs.
- Assist with proofreading and editing publications and course materials.
- Contribute to the social media activities of the programme.
- Support other activities of the Section as required.
To work remotely, the applicant shall have full access to a computer with a modern browser in which to run the latest version of Office 365 applications that will allow him/her to perform the tasks within the scope of the internship.
Minimum IT Security Requirements:
The computer must have basic IT security best practices implemented, including:
- Installation of the latest version of Microsoft Windows operating system, software, and security updates as soon as they are issued.
- Enabling the built-in software firewall that comes with the operating software of the computer.
- Enabling a password manager for the creation of strong passwords and securing access to all UNCTAD/UN-related resources.
General Obligations for Interns:
- Observe all applicable rules, regulations, instructions, procedures, and directives of the Organization, notwithstanding their status as described in section 5 of the UN Internship Programme Administrative Instructions ST/AI/2020/1.
- Provide the receiving departments/offices with a copy of all materials prepared by them during the internship. The UN shall be entitled to all property rights, including but not limited to patents, copyrights, and trademarks, with regard to material which bears a direct relation to or is made in consequence of the services provided under the internship. At the request of the UN, the interns shall assist in securing such property rights and transferring them to the UN in compliance with the applicable law.
- Respect the impartiality and independence required of the UN and of the receiving department/office and shall not seek or accept instructions regarding the services performed under the internship agreement from any government or from any authority external to the UN.
- Unless otherwise authorized by the appropriate official, they may not communicate at any time to the media or any external entity any information acquired during their internship that has not been made public. They may not use such information for personal gain. These obligations also apply after the end of the internship.
- Refrain from any conduct that would adversely reflect on the UN or the receiving department/office and will not engage in any activity incompatible with the aims and objectives of the UN.
Qualifications/Special Skills
The United Nations Internship Programme is intended to expose students or recent graduates to the United Nations in order to enhance their educational experience and help them gain experience in the work of the Organization. Therefore, applicants to the programme must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application:
(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
Additional Requirements:
- Computer literacy in standard software applications is required.
- A demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
- A demonstrated ability to interact successfully with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, including a willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience:
- No professional work experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme.
- However, a field of study closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
- Applicants must be:
- A student in the final year of a bachelor’s (or equivalent) degree, master’s, or Ph.D. programme; or
- Have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. programme.
Applicants must indicate which of the above criteria they meet and attach proof to the application. An official certificate will be required at a later stage.
Languages
- Fluency in spoken and written English and Spanish is required.
- Knowledge of French is an advantage.

Intern Specific Information
- Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
- Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
- Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
