Work Location

  • Duties will support the UN Nairobi office.

Expected Duration

  • 6 months (full-time, 35 hours per week)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), which provides leadership, operational support, and oversight of the UN Security Management System (UNSMS) globally.
  • Contribute to UNDSS’s mission to enable safe and effective delivery of UN programmes while maximizing resources.
  • Gain experience in security risk management, contributing to peace, security, human rights, and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Work under the Division of Partnerships and Specialized Support (DPSS), which provides specialized support in physical security, training, close protection services, critical incident stress management, road safety, innovation, digital transformation, and information management.
  • Work in-person and full-time, with possible adaptations for remote, hybrid, or part-time arrangements (20 hours/week) on an exceptional basis.
  • Assist the Training and Development Section in:
    • Developing training materials and resources on UN safety and security topics.
    • Conducting security training missions for UN security personnel, Designated Officials, Security Management Team members, and UN staff in the field.
    • Supporting portfolios including security awareness, core training for Security Advisers, specialized training for UN security personnel, first responder and use-of-force programmes, instructional design, online learning, and special projects.
  • Specific tasks for the intern include:
    • Collaborating with trainers to develop training materials and resources.
    • Assisting in the translation of materials into French or other languages as needed.
    • Reviewing training materials for clarity and accuracy.
    • Drafting and editing communication materials such as emails, posters, and presentations.
    • Researching and gathering information for awareness campaigns.
    • Organizing and promoting training awareness events and activities.
    • Coordinating logistics for staff awareness trainings and workshops.
    • Assisting with evaluation and analysis of training activities.
    • Preparing reports and presentations on awareness trainings and initiatives.
    • Communicating with participants to provide information and gather feedback.
    • Maintaining inventory of training materials and supplies.
    • Updating content on staff awareness platforms (e.g., trainers network, intranet, newsletters).

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Enrolled in a graduate programme (second degree or higher) or final year of first university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent), or already completed a university degree.
  • Completed online application including Cover Note and Personal History Profile.
  • Cover Note must include:
    • Degree title and graduation date.
    • IT skills and programs proficiency.
    • Top three areas of interest.
    • Explanation of suitability for the internship and interest in the UN Internship Programme.
  • Personal History Profile must include work experience, IT skills, and three references.
  • Must not be the child or sibling of a UN staff member assigned to the same office or reporting line.
  • Adhere to all UN rules, regulations, and directives during and after the internship.
  • Respect confidentiality and impartiality of UN operations.
  • Demonstrated interest in staff development, training, or educational technologies.
  • Ability to proofread and edit content for clarity and consistency.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to use AI-powered tools for productivity.
  • Basic understanding of learning management systems (LMS).

Languages

  • Fluency in English (oral and written) is required.
  • Fluency in French is considered an asset.

Additional Information

  • Internship is unpaid. Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
  • Non-citizens may require a visa and work/employment authorization.
