Afya Research Africa started as a research center but after seeing the obstacles that rural communities in Kenya encountered in accessing quality health care, it began offering health services directly in 2013.
Since then, it has set up 25 health centers, known as Ubuntu-Afya kiosks, that are situated in underserved rural and peri-urban areas. These offer primary care services across sexual and reproductive health, maternal, newborn and child health, noncommunicable diseases, vaccines, and more.
Dr. Samson Gwer, the founder and executive director, is a medical doctor who trained in the United Kingdom and later returned to help his fellow Kenyans.
