A family of seven approached Abdul Rahman Tariq of Afghanaid in Afghanistan’s mountainous Logar province a few weeks ago. With only four thin blankets between them, and no firewood or food, they were desperate for help, unsure whether they’d survive the winter.
“They clearly told me that for the last three months, they are only taking one meal a day because they don't have money to buy bread or flour from the market,” said Tariq, the organization’s director of program implementation and quality.
But unlike other years, there was little he could do to help.
