One focus for the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Bélem, Brazil, this week is the minerals key for the global transition to renewable energy, powering everything from electric vehicles to storage systems for solar and wind. For the first time, so-called transition minerals are featured in a U.N. draft text, released on Friday.
Delegates are currently discussing whether to include transition minerals as a key sector under the Just Transition Work Program, or JTWP — the COP30 process for pushing forward a just energy transition — and what such wording would look like.
