Conference call: What COP25 means for the future of sustainable development

From carbon markets to nature-based solutions, Senior Reporter Michael Igoe gives a look inside the key negotiations that emerged during this year's U.N. Climate Change Conference.

    By Devex Editor // 13 December 2019
The 25th U.N. Climate Change Conference — COP25 — marks an important moment in global policymaking to move the needle in the fight against dangerous climate change. Despite strong calls to action for governments and organizations to come together and push forward an urgent, more radical agenda, many advocates in attendance expressed frustration with the sluggish pace of the negotiations. Devex Managing Editor Deborah Charles spoke to Senior Reporter Michael Igoe — who was on the ground at the conference in Madrid — for insights into the flagship climate conference’s biggest moments and the implications of this year's conversations for the future of work in the global development sector. Highlights from this conference call include: • An overview of the key points of negotiation for the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change — from legal and financial accountability mechanisms for “loss and damage” to the complex structuring of carbon markets. • The continuing influence of the U.S. government on the global climate change agenda, despite its planned withdrawal from the Paris Agreement. • The role of development organizations at COP25 — particularly for multilateral development banks searching for alignment between economic growth and the goals of the Paris Agreement. • An overview of the debate over “nature-based solutions” and moves to introduce regulation for these types of interventions. Speakers: Michael Igoe, senior reporter, Devex Moderator: Deborah Charles, managing editor, Devex Have follow-up questions? Send them to webinars@devex.com. Listen to the full call here:
