Conference call: What the US elections mean for global development

What can we expect from Joe Biden's administration, as he moves forward with the presidential transition? Devex reporters Teresa Welsh, Adva Saldinger, and Michael Igoe discuss the topic with Managing Editor Deborah Charles.

    By Devex Editor // 13 November 2020
While Joe Biden’s victory in the U.S. presidential election continues to face opposition from President Donald Trump — who has so far refused to concede — the president-elect is already moving forward with transition planning and personnel decisions that offer hints about what a Biden administration might prioritize. Devex reporters Adva Saldinger, Michael Igoe, and Teresa Welsh, who have been closely following the transition news, spoke with Managing Editor Deborah Charles to share their insights and the latest updates on the incoming administration’s development priorities. Highlights from this conference call include: • How the Biden administration will tackle the pandemic — for example, by maintaining U.S. membership in WHO and restoring the country’s global health leadership. • What other priorities and regions a Biden administration might elevate, such as climate change, democracy and human rights, women and girls, and Central America. • How a new administration might retain or reject Trump-era reforms and priorities, such as the USAID’s “journey to self-reliance.” • What to expect from budget negotiations, procurement reforms, and the relationship between the White House and Congress. Speakers: • Adva Saldinger, senior reporter, Devex. • Michael Igoe, senior reporter, Devex. • Teresa Welsh, reporter, Devex. Moderator: • Deborah Charles, managing editor, Devex.
