Here’s a bit of what they had to say on how candidates can stand out from its crowded applicant field. Cécile Abraham, business development recruiter for U.K. and Europe: For applicants considering project roles, relevant client, country, and contextual experience is valuable — for example, familiarity with donor’s processes and specific approaches. Applications that are tailored to the role and highlight the relevant skills and technical expertise from academic, project, or business backgrounds always stand out. Clear, detailed CVs that outline roles and responsibilities, as well as achievements or impact, tend to stand out more. Beyond technical and project management competencies, we also look for demonstrable soft skills around problem-solving, communication, and collaboration. Beth McGovern, U.S. government client staffing manager: Candidates with international experience, particularly in the development context, stand out. Those with multiple languages, client experience, previous experience in one of our practice areas, gender equity and social inclusion, or GESI, leadership, digital strategy/data-related work, process improvement, and strong written communication skills are always valued. Here are a few key tips on how to feel truly prepared. Know the format. Make sure you have a clear understanding of how the questions will be asked — or the interview format — and who will be asking them. Take time to learn more about these individuals, as “how you answer questions could depend on the panelists’ background,” Mansueto says. Know the employer. To make sure you have the most accurate and current information about an organization, do not rely only on its website. Many organizations are “releasing a lot of their latest news or big company progress or updates on their LinkedIn company page,” rather than keeping their websites up to date, Mansueto says. Know the job description. It will not only help you prepare your responses based on what the requirements are, but also help you come up with your own questions should the job description omit key details.
