Root. Kovac explains this and offers advice to applicants on how to increase their chances of landing one of these and other roles with the organization. ✅ Shorter applications. “For me, it's the conciseness. It's short applications; it's not 10- or 15-page CVs. It's really the highlights and it’s applications that are tailored to the role and to us,” she says, adding that generic cover letters are easy to spot and will not do you any favors. ✅ International experience. International experience is different than working in a multicultural environment. “We do try to look for both; where someone can really nicely articulate that they are comfortable and have worked in a very diverse environment,” she says. ✅ In-demand skills. “I would really suggest financial management, human resource management; all of the skills around support services, [and] managing a diverse team,” she says, adding that IFRC is moving to prioritize “leadership” over “management.” Working for IFRC: Insider tips on landing a job (Career) More recruiter insights: Chemonics | UNHCR (Career) + With a Devex Career Account, you get unlimited access to the world’s largest global development job board, exclusive members-only career development workshops and events, advice guides, articles, and much more. It is also about working on improving the context in which individuals operate.” --— Dubravka Suzic, chief of the psychosocial well-being section, UNHCR Concerns over staff mental health and well-being continue to grow across sectors, but it has been a longstanding and particularly challenging problem in global development. For some organizations, the pandemic and Russia's war in Ukraine have only heightened the urgency to take more action. Many are, and as part of this effort is a need for more mental health professionals to focus internally on workers dealing with difficulties. As Devex contributor Katrina J. Lane reports, psychosocial professionals with licenses and years of experience are often preferred for these kinds of roles, but in development and emergency settings, additional skills and experience are required. In the wake of news that USAID wants everyone back in the office for at least three days a week — which didn’t go over very well — Devex’s Shabtai Gold is reporting that the World Bank is working up a more rigorous return-to-work policy at its Washington headquarters. As in the USAID case, few details have been given to these World Bank staffers, which has helped create confusion and frustration. The bank’s current stance is for workers to be in the office 2-4 days a week. “We are concerned that a return to a pre-pandemic norm will erode productivity and destroy trust,” says Taleb Esmail, the chair of the World Bank Group’s staff association, who is worried about “staff lower on the hierarchy who need flexibility.” Read more: World Bank's return-to-office plan sparks staff pushback Watch: How to manage yourself when working remotely (Career) + Devex Jobs Alert on LinkedIn: For many more of the top job opportunities in the social impact space from global development's largest job board, subscribe to the new Devex Jobs Alert newsletter on LinkedIn.
