Identifying where you are on the career design map

“We’re moving away from people and careers fitting into a preordained framework.”

    — Dan Freehling, career and leadership coach and founder of Contempus Leadership

During a recent digital Devex career event, we spoke with Dan Freehling, a career coach and founder of Contempus Leadership, about how to design the development career you want. To do so, Freehling created the “Career Design Map” to ensure your career aligns with both adaptability and purpose.

The map highlights four meaningful career types alongside warning areas he calls “dangerous seas” at the extremes of each axis. There’s no right or wrong place to land, but the extremes can be risky, Freehling explains.

So, where are you, and where do you want to be?

    The meaningful four:

Contributor. This is someone on the lower end of both career and leadership. “You're doing enough to contribute to a team or to a cause, but not so much that you know it's a main part of your life,”  Freehling says.

Go-getter. This is when your career advancement is still relatively low, but you're leading beyond what would be expected of someone in your role, Freehling explains.

Expert. You're relatively high in career advancement but low in leadership — you're more of an individual contributor but the confidence in yourself and from others, as well as the value you're bringing to the organization, says Freehling.

Executive. You're very high in both career advancement and leadership — and you're able to do this in a way that's sustained, open, and humble on both, he says.

    The dangerous seas:

Invisibility. If you are too low on the career axis, you could be in the sea of invisibility. “The confidence in yourself and others is too low,” Freehling says.

Arrogance. This is when your confidence in yourself and in those around you is too high, he explains. “You've accomplished a lot, and then the humility is not there,” Freehling says.

Disengagement. Too low on leadership leads to being disengaged — you don't really have a purpose that is driving you.

Burnout. Too high on leadership can lead to burnout. You're enabling people to achieve a common purpose, but you care so much that you do it in an unsustainable way.
