Funding freeze fallout: Top orgs hiring in the US
The Trump administration's foreign aid freeze and dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development has triggered cross-sector disruptions globally. Many of USAID's major partner organizations have reduced staff or implemented furloughs in the U.S. and internationally as a result.
Despite the disruptions, several organizations remain actively engaged and continue to hire professionals in the U.S. to support their global development initiatives. The list of those still hiring is composed of several United Nations agencies, multilateral organizations, NGOs, and foundations.
Here’s a look at some of the most active hiring organizations, based on Devex job board data since Jan. 24.
World Bank Group
Headquarters: Washington, D.C.
Jobs posted since Jan. 24: 152
As uncertainty looms over U.S. foreign aid, questions have emerged about the future of the World Bank’s role and leadership. It has recently placed climate resilience more squarely at the core of its mission, yet current U.S. policy moves — including reneging on $4 billion in financing for the Green Climate Fund — have signaled a potential divergence from these goals.
Despite these broader geopolitical questions, the World Bank remains a key player in global development and continues to actively hire in the U.S., including current openings for an IT engineering officer and an IT engineering analyst.

Jobs posted since Jan. 24: 54
When crises hit, UNICEF is often among the first to deliver humanitarian aid and long-term support to the world’s most vulnerable children. In today’s age, protecting children extends to ensuring that crisis-affected children and young persons are in school. To support this, UNICEF is creating a roster of remote consultants to initiate innovative partnerships and funding opportunities with private and public donors for the Education Cannot Wait fund administered by the agency.

The power of helping others
“There are many opportunities out there for you. They’re not necessarily going to knock on your door, but if you knock on someone else’s door, some of those doors will eventually open.”
— Scott Beale, executive coach and former head of global operations, Peace CorpsIf you’re active on LinkedIn, you’ll know that many in that community are eager to help others struggling. If you’ve lost your job, you might have been receiving lots of messages ranging from kind words to more direct offers, such as pro bono coaching or legal guidance.
Whether or not you’re feeling supported, reaching out to others in need is not only kind but also goes to the heart of what successful networking is all about.
“Please extend your olive branch to others in this time, even though you’re going through it. Everyone else’s, too,” says Jennifer Bangoura, a careers coach and consultant, who speaks of her personal situation related to the USAID funding cuts. A short text or LinkedIn message can go a long way for people who are struggling and could be the start of a more meaningful professional relationship when you’re able to refocus on networking and job hunting.

Around the watercooler
News and views from around global development worth knowing about.
• USAID programs — killed and kept. At the top of the list of terminations sent to the U.S. Congress is a cut in funding to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, which purchases vaccines for millions of children across the world. An award to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, on the other hand, was spared.
• Aid cuts spur domino effect fears abroad. Kenya’s health system is reeling from the Trump administration’s abrupt halt of U.S. foreign aid — a move that has left facilities underfunded, workers unemployed, and vital programs in jeopardy.
• Inside Europe’s development aid overhaul. While the dismantling of American foreign aid is getting more attention, Europe has been restructuring its own apparatus, cutting budgets, prioritizing defense, and raising concerns about the future of global development.
