In February 2026, two influential diplomatic forums — the Munich Security Conference and the African Union summit — concluded with a shared sense of urgency regarding the “destruction” of the old international order and the rise of a more transactional, multipolar reality. The AU’s response? A more integrated continental market, and a new Africa Health Security and Sovereignty Agenda. While in Munich, there was some effort to highlight that development is fundamental to security.
All these, of course, are still part of the ripple effects emanating from the Trump administration’s foreign aid cuts, its retreat from multilateralism, and withdrawal from international organizations and treaties.
