For financial markets, bonds are nothing new. But in terms of development finance, they’ve only recently been used to fund specific objectives — ranging from climate and conservation to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
About a decade ago, green bonds emerged as a way to fund climate-related projects. In the past few years, other types of bonds have been issued to fund ocean conservation or, in the case of Uzbekistan’s SDG bond, education and health.
