The European Commission is funding environment related projects within its thematic program for environment and sustainable management of natural resources (ENRTP) which runs from 2007-2013. An indicative 804 million euros (US$1.1 billion) has been set aside to finance the ENRTP activities.

Simone LeGrand of the European Commission tells the Devex Early Intelligence team that EC will fund projects in developing countries, particularly in the areas of illegal logging prevention, biodiversity, forest management, environmental standards, fisheries and marine governance, water and energy, and sustainable land management.

About 85 million euros (US$112.4 million) has been allocated under this umbrella for two new initiatives related to climate change and environmental sustainability.

The commission's assistance will prioritize countries in Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia, the Mediterranean, Latin America and Africa.
