    Event preview: This week in development cooperation

    The Asian Development Bank ushers in its new president and its annual meeting this week. The World Trade Organization, meanwhile, carries out the final consultations for who will lead the agency next.

    The future of international development cooperation is not just hashed out in dusty field offices and ramshackle schools and hospitals, but also at a variety of events, celebrations and other gatherings.  Below are some of the most noteworthy events for the week starting April 29:

    Millennium Challenge Corporation forum on global development: The power of partnershipsWashington, D.C., United StatesApril 29This second annual forum will highlight the critical role of foreign assistance in U.S. national security and diplomacy. Top global development leaders and practitioners will attend the event, helmed by U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

    Final consultations on selection of next WTO director-generalGeneva, SwitzerlandMay 1-7

    Starting Wednesday, the World Trade Organization will begin its third and final round of consultations, having narrowed down the options for its next chief to Herminio Blanco (Mexico) and Roberto Carvalho de Azevêdo (Brazil).

    African meeting on statistical challenges of monitoring development beyond 2015Pretoria, South AfricaMay 2-3

    The U.N. Economic Commission for Africa and the African Development Bank will co-host the event, as participants exchange experiences and discuss the ongoing international and regional policy work for the post-2015 development agenda. The goal: to design a roadmap that meets the statistical challenges of the data demand beyond 2015.

    46th Asian Development Bank annual meetingNew Delhi, IndiaMay 2–5

    Development for empowerment will be the focus of this year’s conference, gathering ADB’s board of governors and up to 4,000 leaders and representatives from the public, private and civil sectors around sessions and seminars on addressing development issues and bolstering aid in the Asia Pacific region.
