German aid worker found guilty of child abuse

A local German court has sentenced a 58-year-old aid worker to four and a half years in prison.

The aid worker was found guilty of sexually abusing Haitian minors while involved in programs to help street children in the Caribbean country, Al Jazeera says. The man, who heads a Berlin-based aid group, was arrested in 2011 after attempting to smuggle into Germany an 11-year-old boy believed to be one of his victims.

Prosecutors were initially seeking a six-year prison term for the aid worker, whose name was withheld in news reports, according to Al Jazeera, citing German news agency DPA.
