Global health org JSI laid off half of staff due to US aid freeze

This includes about 1,100 staffers across the U.S. and international programming.

    By Sara Jerving // 14 February 2025
The Boston-based global health nonprofit JSI has laid off half of its staff due to the U.S. foreign aid freeze. This accounts for about 1,100 staffers across the U.S. and international programming. The organization, which was established in 1978, works on improving and building public health capacity globally. In its work, it collaborates with government agencies, the private sector, and local nonprofit and civil society organizations. “In this challenging moment, we remain committed to improving health and education in communities here in the U.S. and around the world,” a spokesperson told Devex. JSI was one of USAID’s top bilateral grantees, and its total federal action obligation in fiscal year 2024 was $111,271,399. Along with partners, the organization led the implementation of the Country Health Information Systems and Data Use, or CHISU, program — a multicountry flagship program of USAID Bureau for Global Health’s Office of Health Systems. In 2024, $3.6 million was obligated to JSI to support CHISU activities in Kenya. The layoffs come amid a ripple effect in the aid sector following the Trump administration's sudden halt to the U.S. Agency for International Development’s global programming. This has hit countless organizations with terminations and furloughs. This week eight organizations — including some of USAID’s largest contracting partners, DAI and Chemonics International — sued Trump, USAID, the U.S. Department of State, and others for “irreparable harm.” On Thursday, a U.S. federal judge ordered the administration to restore foreign aid funding. Update, Feb. 14, 2025: This piece has been updated to reflect the figure obligated to JSI to support CHISU activities in Kenya.
