As the link between climate change and food systems becomes ever more clear, an ancient but long-overshadowed crop is getting its moment in the spotlight: millets.
Experts believe the revival of the coarse cereal crop could help solve both global food security challenges and the climate crisis — which was on display at a dedicated Food, Agriculture, and Water Day at this year’s 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP 28, in Dubai, where millets featured in several side panels and events.
Their potential is so great that the Food and Agriculture Organization declared 2023 the International Year of Millets — an initiative proposed by India, which is the world’s top producer.
